The most pompous T20 league in the world, The Indian Premier League had its retention window closed on the 4th of January. And what a magnanimous event it turned out to be. Crores were spent on players, the franchises preferred to retain while the others wait eagerly for the player’s auction which is scheduled for the 27th and 28th of January. A total of 18 players were retained by the franchises and the focus now completely shifts to the D-day. But IPL 2018 Retained players for KKR became the major talking point for everyone.
One phenomenon that has bewildered audiences during this year’s IPL hullabaloo has been the Right-to-match(RTM) card. Let me make it simple for you.
HOW DOES RTM WORK?: If a player is acquired by a franchise for a particular price in this year’s auction, the last franchise the player had played for can match the bidding amount and retain him. For example, If Sanju Samson who played for Delhi Daredevils last year is acquired by Sunrisers Hyderabad for 3 crores in this year’s auction, DD can use the RTM card to retain him for the same price.
The franchises have chosen their talisman players in the players pre-auction, letting loose their wallets. Let’s have a look as to how the teams use the RTM card. First up, the team from the west, The Kolkata Knight Riders(KKR).
PLAYERS RETAINED: Sunil Narine (12.5 crores) and Andre Russell(8.5 crores).

KKR have retained 2 players and are eligible to use the RTM for a maximum of 3 players. Who’re the favourites? FanFight has picked 4 probable players who KKR is likely to retain using the RTM card.
1) Robin Uthappa: has been an integral cog in the KKR legion. 388 runs in the last season and 394 runs in the 2016 season makes him a certain favourite to be retained via the RTM. His work behind the stumps can now be deemed nifty but it’s his hitting prowess that’s gone up a notch. KKR, after player retention, have a balance of 59 crores to form a sturdy unit and Uthappa’s likely to feature in it.
2) Kuldeep Yadav: The Chinaman has played only 15 IPL games so far and has picked 18 wickets. The stats don’t do justice to what this talented youngster brings to the field. An art which has been mastered only by a few and how well has Kuldeep Yadav honed it. The two-time champions will be up and ready to get the left-arm magician back.
3) Manish Pandey: He’s always played second fiddle to either Uthappa or Lynn and sometimes Gautam Gambhir. The stylish right-handed batsman from Karnataka has all the shots in the book and can dismantle any bowling attack on his day. Pandey had a brilliant 2017 IPL where he finished 7th on the list of the highest run-getter. KKR shouldn’t let go off him and try to use the RTM if another franchise acquires him.
4. Umesh Yadav: Yadav finished the 2017 IPL with 17 wickets, no.8 on the highest wicket-takers tally. The ease at which he touches speeds in excess of 145 kmph is both amusing and frightening. KKR have the option of retaining at least 3 Indian players and Umesh Yadav might marginally make it but he’s got some stiff competition.
Noticeable mentions: Gautam Gambhir
Gambhir has led KKR to two IPL titles and will most likely play for KKR this year too. But, will he be retained via the RTM?
