GAMEWEEK 23- TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR vs EVERTON | MATCH PREVIEW

GAMEWEEK 23- TOT vs EVE | MATCH PREVIEW: “Nil Satis nisi optimum”. A Latin phrase which means “only the good is enough” has been Everton football club’s motto. Before the start of the 2017/18 season, Ronald Koeman went full throttle with Everton’s expenditure and for once the Toffees envisaged a top 6 finish. After Game Week 22, Everton are 9th on the league table, with 27 points out of a possible 66 and only 7 points away from the relegation zone. Precarious is the term that best describes the Premier League and the same adjective defines Everton’s season.

Koeman was deemed redundant after a preposterous start. With 2 wins in the first 10 games(a total of 8 points), Everton were staring at a ghastly season. Sam Allardyce’s introduction proved to be a positive move and the numbers seem to have gotten better since. In the last 12 games, Everton have lost only 3, won 5 and have drawn 4 games.

The Spurs, on the other hand, are currently 5th on the points table but are a massive 21 points away from the top spot. The league title has drifted afar but the Spurs are still in contention for a spot in the Champions League. They’re only 6 points away from Manchester United who are placed 2nd. Mauricio Pochettino has always preferred high-pressing, attacking style of football, but the end product hasn’t been as desired.

  • Tottenham are unbeaten in their last 10 Premier League games against Everton (Won 5 Drew 5), their longest such run against them since a run of 13 between 1997 and 2003.
  • Everton haven’t won away in the league at Spurs since November 2008 (1-0), drawing three and losing five since then.

PLAYERS TO WATCH OUT FOR:

Harry Kane(Tottenham Hotspur): Harry Kane went goalless in the month of August and his goal tally has already reached 18 after 22 games. At this rate we’re looking at a 30-goal season and yet another golden boot for Kane. Harry Kane isn’t a conventional poacher who sneaks in between defenders and nets goals. He’s got the ability to structure an attack and finish with immaculate aplomb. Kane’s only one behind Teddy Sheringham’s record of 97 goals for Tottenham in the premier league and he’s reached there at a canter. Sheringham scored 97 in 233 games, while Kane’s got to 96 in 133.

Minutes played: 1771, Goals: 18(highest in the league), Assists: 1

Yannick Bolasie(Everton): Bolasie has played only three games so far this season and how badly have the Toffees missed him. Pace, skill and a dextrous vision, Bolasie’s got it all. The Spurs have world class defenders in their ranks but the Congo international has the ability to outmanoeuvre even the best. He hasn’t got numbers this season to prove how crucial a threat he could turn out to be, but if Tottenham can keep him quiet, they’re bound to produce yet another clean sheet.

WHO ARE THE FAVOURITES: Everton have won only one of their last 43 Premier League away games against the ‘big six’ ,drawing 15 and losing 27. Their last win was a 1-0 victory against Manchester United.

At home Everton have managed only 8 points out of a possible 27. That’s a ratio of 29.6%, the lowest in the Premier League this year. Everton have also failed to win 18 of their last 19 away matches.

Tottenham are undefeated in their last 10 home matches and with Kane scoring goals for fun, they are assuredly the favourites.
